Bali: playground or breeding ground for young designers?
October 22nd, 2007
The creativity of youth was on display in Bali this October as swarms of Balinese youths came together to display their custom designed bicycles at the first annual Bali Boys Bike Competition.
Held in Sanur, Bali, the inaugural competition was organised by Australian PR company, Albino Blanco, and was inspired by the recent pushbike modification craze sweeping the streets of Indonesia. The competition coincides with the making of a documentary by Australian filmmakers Noni Couell and Sam Noble, which records the amazing design process and lifestyle lived by the young creatives who live for their own unique design project.
Fourteen year-old Puru Signa Tias won the major cash prize for his imaginative modification, which featured customised wheels, and tailored handlebars. He said the money would go straight back into maintaining and further modifying his bike.
It may not be high profile, but this event could be a launch pad for the future of Indonesian product design.
