Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp, fjmt, has been awarded the International S-Lab design award at the International Teaching and Laboratory Design Awards.

The prestigious S-Lab award program is the result of a global initiative intended to recognise the best practice, design and operation of laboratory facilities worldwide. The fjmt design Tyree Eneergy Technologies Building at the University of New South Wales was the only Australian project to be selected from a shortlist of over 40 international entries.

Located at the gateway of the UNSW campus, the Tyree building is a unique and innovative powerhouse, designed with intention to offer a space where not only research and education can occur, but real world industry action can take place too, and importantly, to offer a place where these three spheres can collaborate. The building has achieved the prestigious 6 star Green certification from the Green Building Council of Australia.

S-Lab Director, Peter James stated that “The 2014-15 Awards, which attracted entries from around the world, show that laboratories find the ‘holy grail’ of better science, improved effectiveness and efficiency and lower environmental impact if they rethink many traditional precepts of design and operation.”
