Cundall’s approach recognised in 2007 Sustainable Awards
November 2nd, 2007
According to Cundall’s director David Clark, good design principles and lateral thinking lead to sustainable award-winning buildings.
The Australian building services design consultancy has been named a finalist in the Sustainable Building Services Awards 2007, presented by the UK’s Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).
The firm was recognised for its unconventional and sustainable approach to building, after having refurbished and developed two existing sites into clean, green quarters in Melbourne.
One of the projects, the $1.5million Sustainable Living Centre at St Leonard’s College, transformed an existing classroom into the centre’s new foyer. The hands-on building uses solar and water walls to eliminate air-conditioning.
55 St Andrews Place was an upgrade and fitout of a 1960’s office building for the Department of Treasury and Finance in Melbourne’s CBD. Rather than simply gutting the building back to a shell, the existing ceiling and services were retained, and the building fabric improved by replacing heavily tinted glazing with clear, single glass.
These buildings are just two examples of how Australian sustainable building design is achieving international respect.
