Canberra MRT Station Goes Nautical

Canberra MRT Station Goes Nautical

January 7th, 2015

DP Architects have been responsible for the design of a significant number of rail projects in Singapore, from Orchard MRT Station and Somerset MRT Station in the heart of town, to ones located in the heartlands, such as the Serangoon and Woodleigh stations.

For its upcoming Canberra MRT Station project, which sits along the existing North-South line, the design team has drawn inspiration from the site’s historical importance as one of the main conduits into the former British navel base in northern Singapore.

The elevated station, which is slated for completion in 2019, references nautical imagery and movement. In a welcoming gesture, gentle wave-like forms along the roof beckon incoming trains. Public spaces are kept open and inviting with natural daylight streaming in through glazed façades, while louvres bring in natural ventilation. Landscaping is also thoughtfully incorporated into the design through the integration of planters along the periphery of the platform and a green roof over the station’s covered linkway.

The station will be well connected to existing as well as future developments in the neighbourhood, with covered linkways, cycling tracks, bus stops and taxi stands located at street level. In addition, of the station’s five entrances, one will be integrated with a future development across the road, connecting commuters to the station via an overhead link bridge.

DP Architects is also working on several other upcoming rail projects, including Beauty World MRT Station and Thomson-East Coast Line.
