Engineering consultancy firm Web Structures was founded by Tehran-born structural engineer Dr Hossein Rezai in Singapore in 1996.

Today, the firm operates from offices in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, London and Shanghai and is involved in the design and realisation of some of the most impressive structures in over 27 countries.  It counts WOHA, CSYA, SCDA Architects, WOW Architects, Arc Studio and Foster + Partners amongst its frequent collaborators. The firm has also collaborated with Zaha Hadid Architects, UNStudio, Kengo Kuma, and most recently, Maki Associates and Rogers Stirk Harbor + Partners. 

For his involvement and significant contribution to the Singapore design scene, Dr Rezai was awarded the ‘Designer of the Year’ accolade in the 2016 cycle of President’s Design Award. He is the first ‘Designer of the Year’ award recipient nominated from the category of ‘engineering Design’. 

Web Structures celebrated the closing of the year at its office on Carpenter Street on Friday, 7 December 2018 with over 200 friends from across the architectural, engineering and design fields.

“The year 2018 is a year of delivery,” said Dr Rezai. The year has seen successful delivery of a number of challenging projects for Web Structures and its sustainability consultancy subsidiary Web Earth in Singapore, Malaysia and 15 other countries. 

“Our team at Web Earth are meeting the environmental challenges of climate change tirelessly, one project after another,” said Dr Rezai. Web Earth’s projects completed this year include The NUS Sports Centre (designed by Forum Architects, read more in Cubes 93), additional facilities for the University of Technology Petronas (designed by GDP Architects), and  Alice Smith Secondary School Campus Extension in Kuala Lumpur (designed by DP Architects). 

Web Structures and Web Earth’s ongoing projects include the Khoo Teck Phuat National University Children’s Medical Institute Pediatric Ambulatory Centre (KTPNUCMI) designed by Forum Architects, a nursing home in Bukit Batok designed by MKPL, and the Arzuria tower in Jakarta by SCDA Architects. 

The year 2018 also saw the formal establishment of the Milan Research Lab, an R&D consultancy for advanced structural engineering in Milan initiated by Dr Rezai and Politecnico di Milano Professor Antonio Capsoni.  

Asked about the company’s hope for 2019, Dr Rezai said, “ [To] continue to work in the best interest of the design community, the environment and the planet.”
