From a curated exhibition space to the arrival of noted regional names in design, Central is set to be a thriving hub of creativity at the upcoming Hong Kong Indesign: The Event, to be held on 30 November 2013.

There will be much to see and do at Central come event day. The exquisite Gray Hawk is here from the vast open plains of South Australia to launch the ‘Ruhlmann Bed’ and showcase their bespoke wooden furniture; earthy textures carved into unearthly elegance.

Seventhirtyam will also be here with new designs from David Trubridge, Bac Sac, Baobab, Tim Webber and Variopinte, and as if that’s not exciting enough, David Trubridge has designed an extravagant light installation just for the occasion.

Make sure you’re dressed to impress because “interior designer to the stars”, celebrated Singaporean Peter Tay will be hosting an exhibition giving insight into his work. Known for his signature approach, which has earned him fame and status as fashionably elite, he himself considers it more to be a body of poetry or philosophy.

Cubes Indesign magazine will be collaborating with Carl Hansen & Søn and Bolon on a lounge space, located at The Curated Space

We’re only halfway through our list of Central highlights so, at this stage, in case your legs are starting to tremble, we should put you at ease. Not only will our free design trail buses be going from showroom to showroom, but we’ve also refined all of our Central Exhibitors to just two hotspots: Steelcase, who will not be showing out of their regular showroom, but have decided for the occasion to host a pop-up at Kumquat Gallery on Hollywood Road. Our second hotspot is the multi-storey curation we’ve done at The Space, which will house a number of installations and exhibitors. So your pedometer can have the day off!

If you do feel in need for rest and relaxation, though, The Cubes Indesign Lounge is just the place to visit. Still in The Space, this lounge area is the home of Cubes Indesign magazine, a Singapore-based publication that offers a bimonthly curation of stories on the projects, people and products of their local architecture and design scene.

You probably won’t want to close your eyes, though – this relaxation space has been created in collaboration with renowned Danish furniture company Carl Hansen & Søn and cutting-edge Swedish design house Bolon. It’s also home to one of the event’s collaborations for The Project – Cubes Indesign has partnered with APU (Architectural Project Unit) to create an imaginative ‘Rhythm’-themed installation.

Exhibitor – Steelcase

All of the above is taking place in The Space, and our final highlight from Central, just a short bus ride away, is the Steelcase pop-up at Kumquat Gallery. As part of The Project, they’ve teamed up with the talented students from the Savannah College of Art & Design, so be sure to see how these ambitious students have integrated the Steelcase brand into the theme of ‘Rhythm’.

They’re also launching their new ‘Gesture’ office chair, a response to the findings of a study of over 2,000 people, and the new postures that have come about from our use of technologies – ‘The Text’, ‘The Swipe’ and so on. Their Vice President of Global Design says, “Gesture reflects a new science of sitting. When you feel it, you’ll get it.”
