A terrific example of designing for your surroundings, Pedras Salgadas is a hotel deep in the hinterland of the Portugal’s countryside comprising a series of modular eco-houses.
March 23rd, 2016
Developed and designed by architect Luis Rebelo de Andrade, the Pedras Salgadas project is not just an enticing and all-too-gorgeous hotel, the entire build is a wonderful example of designing with respect, concern and care for the existing environment.
Composed of 12 modular eco-houses, two tree houses and one main house, Pedras Salgadas seamlessly blend into the centuries-old park in which it’s located.
The tree houses are equal parts luxury and playful, recalling childhood playrooms from the outside, but resplendent with the comforts of a luxury design hotel. The beds in each tree house have been positioned below a spacious skylight so as to view the stars and lush greenery surrounding the hotel.
With each eco-house featuring outdoor decks or free spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows, nature never seems far from the living spaces. Rebelo de Andrade worked with Modular System on the prefabricated modules, ensuring no disturbance or damage to the land and trees.
Interiors throughout are kept clean and minimalist with a white-on-white colour scheme, allowing the surround to take place as the real hero of visual design. The white has been paired natural wooden floors and furniture, bestowing a sense of warmth to the spaces throughout.
