Turning unassuming details into a thoughtful design moment, hardware from the Hemispheres by Bankston + Civilian collaboration extends from the joinery at the CIVILIAN Office.
March 31st, 2025
With a locale in the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, the CIVILIAN Office occupies a secluded space within the one-million-square-foot site erected in 1942. Perched on the 12th floor and framing panoramic views of the East River and Manhattan, the workplace features a closed layout with fenestrations concentrated along a single elevation, presenting challenges for effective natural light infiltration and spatial illumination.

Thus, an objective in the design brief was to maximise light permeation deeper into the space to improve brightness, functionality, and, by extension, productivity. The approach amalgamates the industrial aesthetic of the loft-like environment with a palette of warmer, illustrious elements. The addition of a burgundy leather lounge set, juxtaposed with sculptural vases and art pieces, evokes a sense of conviviality and ebullience, remodelling the raw space into an inviting working environment.

Hardware from the Hemispheres by Bankston + CIVILIAN collaborative range was utilised throughout the remodel, including the H03 Half Moon in Polished Chrome, serving as a gentle reminder of the results of endurance, perseverance and collaboration behind the revered studio’s oeuvre. Among the myriad configurations offered by the Hemispheres range, Polished Chrome was selected for its luminous, reflective properties, juxtaposed with Walnut and Potoro domes to introduce a nuanced interplay of texture and materiality. Elevating the everyday, the H04 Pull Handle Long extends from the cupboard doors, its Polished Chrome finish paired with Potoro Gold domes for a refined contrast in texture and materiality.
