Vitra has a new addition to its family of wooden dolls.
February 23rd, 2012
Alexander Girard’s now-famous wooden dolls were born from the designer’s love of bright colours and passion for the folk art of South America, Asia and Eastern Europe.
Girard, who studied architecture before he became Director of Design in the textiles division of Herman Miller Group in 1952, was bold in his use of colour at a time when muted hues were the norm.
His wooden doll collection, which he began as a personal hobby in the early 1960s, was inspired by his own massive collection of popular art.
The pieces are now produced by the Vitra Design Museum based on Girard’s originals. Made from solid pinewood and hand-painted, the dolls work as both a toy and a decorative element.
The 18th doll in the range (below) is now available at Space Furniture.
