A stool inspired by pouring aluminium is the newest design from Charles Wilson – the Serif stool.

Serif is Charles Wilson’s latest design, a cast aluminium and powder coated stool with a flowing, liquid shape and a sculptural quality.

“I designed [Serif] last year for an exhibition Andrew Simpson [of Vert Design] put together, a collection of Australian designers working in cast aluminium,” Wilson explains.

“I suddenly had this idea, literally out of nowhere. I was thinking about the idea of pouring aluminium.”

The result is a form that resembles a by-product of something else or a discard, “as though it was from a piece of machinery, like a bit of agricultural equipment, which then got adapted and it happened to be a stool,” Wilson says.

“I find people sit down and [are] amazed at how comfortable it is.”

Serif marks a new direction for Wilson as he collaborates with a Shanghai-based manufacturer, allowing him to take more control in the design and manufacturing process and take new direction.

A bart stool version of Serif will soon be made available.

An accompanying table, La Nina – named after the weather pattern, inspired by its fluid form – is also in the works.

Serif is now available from Space Furniture and Top 3 By Design.

Charles Wilson was featured as an Indesign Luminary in issue #55 of the magazine.
