Headed up by the inimitable Shelley Simpson, Mud has risen from humble experiments on a kick wheel in Simpson’s share-house garage, to a international brand which specialises in the hand-production of beautiful kitchen and home accessories.

Founded by Simpson some 20 years ago, Mud is characterised by its unique shapes and colour schemes, conceived by Simpson and her talented team of in-house makers. Two key moments have been pivotal in the development of Mud’s tactile and colourful wares.

Simpson recounts a piece of advice received from a notable Sydney retailer: “What we can’t get in Australia is simple forms with beautiful colours.”

Simpson, who has an excellent eye for colour instantly gelled with this idea, drawing on her love for travelling and landscapes, as well as good food and eating, to devise an 18-hue palette that has most customers deliberating for hours over colour combination and choice.

Mud’s unique blending of matte outer finish and glazed inner finish also stemmed from a lightning strike moment.

“On seeing one of my pieces part fired and unglazed a friend exclaimed, ‘Isn’t the matte finish fabulous?’,” Simpson says. From there a new aesthetic was born.

Untrained in the arts of ceramics, Simpson’s natural affinity for clay materials and pottering processes has seen her in good stead.

Mud crockery and kitchenware can be found in the famed Momofuku restaurants, not to mention Nigella Lawson’s kitchen cabinets.

It’s an A-list following that has been borne from a commitment to quality and beauty. “When you’re making you have to be focused in the moment,” says Simpson. “It’s quite meditative.”

Available through SeehoSu, the Mud range of products can be viewed and purchased at Studio SeehoSu, located at 1 Mary’s Place, Surry Hills.

Studio SeehoSu is open by appointment Monday – Wednesday, Thursday to Friday 9am – 5pm, and Saturday 10:30am – 4pm.
