Ornamental language punctuates wall covering designs.

Woven Image is now offering KnollTextiles’ Grammar Collection, a trio of wall coverings created by Abbott Miller, partner at international design firm Pentagram.

Each of the Filter, Switch and Merge patterns reflect Miller’s expertise in typography and are based on a series of letters overlapping or intermingling to become an interior’s visual backdrop.

Loosely named after a 19th century historical text on typography entitled ‘The Grammar of Ornament’ – the collection has inverted this classic theme, exemplifying the decorative beauty of language and ornamental qualities of grammar.

Miller sought to create a contemporary interpretation not reliant on classic motifs,  and found the answer in language.

Merge – the largest scale pattern – is a bold study in overlapping type, walking the line between legibility and illegibility.

The Filter design is formed with interweaving motifs resulting in lace-markings, which act as a wall veil.

A third design – Switch – pays homage to typography’s vertical components with a single “I”.

Both Merge and Filter are set against white backgrounds, with one exception, to ensure patterns read as if emitting light and colour palettes range from Merge’s bold, graphic hues and Filter’s sophisticated offerings to the fresh, tranquil tones of Switch.
