An exhibition titled 'Synthetic Spaces' by Maycon Sedrez and Gregory Pitts from Deakin University is taking place at the Bates Smart Gallery in Melbourne.

AI-generated imagery is introducing new possibilities and challenges for contemporary architectural design. While its most profound impact may lie in reshaping how architects design and practise, rather than altering final design outcomes, concerns are growing about AI’s potential to displace creative roles within the profession.

Synthetic Spaces explores how text-to-image AI tools can support architectural communication and design development. The works presented are the result of research-led experimentation conducted through design studios and collaborative workshops, aimed at identifying emerging methods and meaningful applications of AI in architectural practice.

Synthetic Spaces proposes that AI can enhance, rather than replace, the creative processes of architects. The design outcomes reflect unique workflows that integrate analogue methods such as model-making and sketching with AI-driven processes. These include the development of prompts and architectural descriptions to generate imagery, the combination of physical models with AI outputs, and blending of hand sketches with iterative, generative processes.

Through these investigations, Synthetic Spaces invites visitors to reflect on the evolving role of AI in architecture and how these tools can empower architects to remain creative, intentional, and in control of their designs. The exhibition aims to inspire critical thinking and explore new ways of designing architecture in an increasingly digital world.
