The Naomi Milgrom Foundation has announced that the MPavilion, designed by Tadao Ando, will stay in Queen Victoria Gardens for five more years.

Tadao Ando’s MPavilion to remain open until 2030

The news that Tadao Ando’s MPavilion will remain open until 2030 follows a decision by the City of Melbourne in June 2025. Since opening in November 2023, the pavilion – Ando’s only built work in the Southern Hemisphere – has become the most visited MPavilion to date, welcoming over 300,000 visitors and hosting hundreds of events from sunrise yoga to community-led conversations.

As part of the extension, the Naomi Milgrom Foundation will continue to own and care for the pavilion, delivering free cultural programming and ongoing maintenance at no cost to the public.

“We would like to thank the thousands from across Australia and globally who added their name in support to keep this pavilion in the gardens for longer,” says Naomi Milgrom AC, Commissioner of MPavilion and Founder of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation. “MPavilion will continue to be a place for the architecture, design, arts and creative communities and all Melburnians.”

Ando himself adds: “I am honoured that MPavilion will remain in Queen Victoria Gardens as a place for the community to gather and reflect. Architecture is not only about buildings, it is about creating places for people and nature to coexist. My deepest thanks to Naomi Milgrom AC, a true champion of architecture, whose vision and generosity have made this possible.”

Over 2,500 members of the public signed an open letter in support of the proposal, alongside more than 100 artist and collaborator signatures, and 60 industry letters. The pavilion has also received international acclaim with ten global design awards. MPavilion by Tadao Ando will remain open and free for all to enjoy in the heart of the city, open daily 8am – 6pm.
