A leading urban renewal expert will be helping design a guide to provide practical and creative insights to how NSW cities can grow an urban forest aligned to their unique contexts.
October 26th, 2015
Yvonne Lynch will be joining NSW Councils to share and discuss how they can adapt an award-winning, internationally recognised urban forest strategy to their local area.
Lynch is an urban strategist and communications specialist, and held a series of master class at Parks and Leisure Australia’s National Conference this month following a leadership role at the City of Melbourne’s multidisciplinary Urban Forest & Urban Ecology Team. The team’s work has been recognised and awarded nationally and internationally for its progressive approach to urban forestry, climate adaptation and citizen participation.
The Urban Forest strategy is one of the more powerfully transformative solutions to come out of the 202020 Vision, a national plan to see a 20% increase in urban green space by 2020 – which has the potential to radically transform not only the local community, but also our cities’ climate, productivity and health.
Adopting urban forest and water sensitive urban design strategies are integral to responding to the El Niño threat, which is set to bring record heat across Australia by Christmas and continue to well into next year. In order to help Local Governments overcome some of the most common barriers to the creation of more, and better, green space, the 202020 Vision in conjunction with the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government have developed this How to Grow an Urban Forest guide.
This guide and City of Melbourne’s key insights will be shared with NSW council’s to encourage further progress and commitment to an urban forest approach.
