UTS to partner with Smart Light Sydney Festival.
May 4th, 2009
The University of Technology, Sydney will partner with Vivid Sydney in supporting the inaugural event from 26 May – 14 June.
Over the course of the festival, ten of Australia’s top lighting designers and artists will establish interactive installations for the ..art Light Exhibition at UTS. Curator Mike Day believes that “as the host of Australia’s creative industries, UTS takes a leading role in creating future sustainable design solutions”.
Mike Day’s personal contribution to the exhibition will be based around research into the perceptions of lighting for feminine beauty across eastern and western cultures, explored through two installations at the UTS DAB LAB Research Gallery. His work is titled HARSH: Light Complex(ions) and (Trans)lucent.
To further the University’s contribution to industry development, the ‘Smart Light Symposia at UTS’ will be hosted at various locations. The future of lighting design and innovation will be explored in the workshops featuring talented creators such as the institution’s own Tom Barker.
“Sydney’s Smart Light Festival is an opportunity to celebrate the quality of design produced in Australia but also to uncover future innovative ways we can design urban lighting to produce less pollution and photon wastage for a green, global and connected city,” he says.
The Sydney Smart Light Festival also includes a Smart Light Sydney Light Walk featuring lighting installations throughout significant public venues such as the Sydney Observatory, Museum of Contemporary Art and Customs House.
Free to all Sydneysiders, this event is founded and directed by UTS academic Maryanne Kyriakou.
