The 2015 edition of Design Shanghai drew a record-breaking 42,000 visitors and over 300 brand participants. During which, visitors witnessed a plethora of installations and events. Those looking forward to the annual extravaganza will not be disappointed come March.

Design Shanghai 2016 promises to showcase the best brands worldwide alongside new design launches. The event will provide opportunities to foster relationships with key business and design players in Asia. This is a good place to get to know more about China’s rapidly growing design scene.

Here are the notable features to keep an eye out for this year:

Zotem by Kim Thomé for Swarovski

Conceived by London-based Norwegian designer Kim Thomé for Swarovski, Zotem – originally created for the Victoria & Albert Museum for London Design Festival – will be recreated for the upcoming Design Shanghai 2016.

The picturesque installation comprises of visually exciting geometric patterns that are printed on a mesh canvas. Bespoke crystals by Swarovski projects prismatic colours caused by reflection and refraction, crafting a hypnotising masterpiece.

New Craftsmanship by YANG HOUSE

Influential Chinese Designer Jamy Yang of Yang Design will present Yang House Craftsmanship at the Classic Design Hall. The installation aims to encourage the visitor to uncover traditional handcrafts to consider the means of how Chinese heritage can merge with a modern lifestyle.

Yang is the founder of Yang Design Museum, China’s first private industrial design museum housing a collection of products in a converted industrial building in Shanghai.

Supernova by Petra Krausova for Lasvit

Petra Krausova has created Supernova, a lighting glass kinetic sculpture that is composed of clear glass components with linear textures. Varying lighting patterns are created from different angles. An invitation is posed to the audience to look beyond the glass, as the piece comes alive with movement. The installation showcases the nature of Lasvit through its fusion of traditional glass blowing techniques with the insertion of progressive technology.

Furniture Design Installation at Xintiandi

Two satellite installations will be showcased at design and shopping district, Xintiandi. The House, Xintiandi’s newly opened shopping centre, will host an educational piece that will chart the evolution of the design industry, whereas at the external courtyard of Xintiandi, the ‘future’ of design will be presented through a large glass structure that houses a selection of 3D printers in action.

Frank Chou Design Studio, Bold Series

The latest list of exhibitors include Anyi Gallery, Caesarstone, Creazioni, Nanchow, Nature Bamboo, Seventhirty am, Xcellent, spanning halls titled Contemporary, Classic and Collectibles.

Look out for the seminar programme that will revolve the theme, The Language of Design, with a line-up of speakers including André Fu, Founder of AFSO; Benjamin Hubert, Founder and Director of Layer; Eric Lee, Managing Director, Anomaly Shanghai; Patricia Urquiola, Art Director of Cassina; Samuel Chan, Director of Channels; William Lim, Founder and Managing Director of CL3 Architects and more.
