Australian architecture practice Genton is expanding internationally, opening a new studio in London as it looks to bring its experience in major public, civic and infrastructure projects to Europe and the Middle East.
Announced on 29th October, the move marks a significant development for the practice, founded by Steven Toia in 2010, which has established a presence in Sydney and Melbourne over the past 16 years.
“At Genton we have consistently delivered design excellence for our clients and the public. This launch marks Genton’s transition from an Australian practice into an international practice, sharing our creativity and expertise, expanding our scope and introducing exciting new partnerships,” says Toia, Genton Founder and Principal.

The expansion comes ahead of the anticipated opening of Powerhouse Parramatta, one of Australia’s most significant cultural infrastructure projects. Awarded through an international design competition in 2019, the project brings together Moreau Kusunoki as lead designer, Genton as local architect and Arup as engineering partner.
The NSW Government-funded museum represents the state’s largest investment in cultural infrastructure since the Sydney Opera House and demonstrates Genton’s experience working within multidisciplinary teams on complex public projects.

The practice’s portfolio also includes Melbourne’s Reservoir Station, which received the Special Prize Exterior at the 2021 Prix Versailles World Architecture and Design Awards. Together, these projects reflect an established focus on transport infrastructure, public architecture and the broader urban experience.
Leading the new London studio is Zak Barry, who previously spent nine years with Genton and served as the practice’s project leader for the Powerhouse Parramatta design competition. Barry relocated to London in 2024, taking on a role leading marketing and submissions at Woods Bagot before returning to Genton to establish its European presence.

“Europe has a deep culture of design quality in its civic buildings, and the region is undergoing a significant period of urban renewal as cities decarbonise,” says Barry.
“Genton has a proven record of delivering high-quality public projects. We see a real opportunity to build new partnerships here and make a lasting contribution to cities across the region.”
With studios now operating in London, Sydney and Melbourne, Genton joins a growing number of Australian architecture practices pursuing international work. Its expansion signals an ambition to translate experience gained through Australia’s major civic and infrastructure projects into new contexts, while establishing relationships with clients and collaborators across international markets.
