Bios antibacterial surfaces designed by Casalgrande Padana
January 27th, 2010
Maintaining the highest health standards is one of the most important factors when designing for public spaces – from hospitals and laboratories to swimming pools, kitchens and canteens, the minimisation of bacteria is key.
This is where the Bios range of tiles from Classic Tiles shines. The line of tiles is characterised by remarkable antibacterial properties, achieved through a unique, patented production process.
The process is the result of a research collaboration between Casalgrande Padana and the University of Modena. Essentially, mineral particles are embedded into the raw material – rather than simply a coating – generating an extremely effective antibacterial reaction.
Studies by the university have found that the product can achieve a 99.9% reduction of the 4 main bacteria families: Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
These unique properties are not diminished over time and don’t require light to become active (as with other products on the market). In fact the benefits of ‘Bios’ are actually magnified when exposed to moisture, making them ideal for areas such as pools and locker rooms.
Bios also offers flexibility in finishes, colours and formats, selected for the specific application, with the option of being supplied in natural, polished and glazed versions – all of which will not effect the antibacterial qualities.
