The winners of the 2009 NSW Australian Institute of Architects have been announced.

Education is once again impressing in this year’s Architecture Awards, with the announcment of the NSW Public Building winner, All Saints Primary School in Belmore by Candalepas Associates.
The project received the coveted Sulman Award for Public buildings at the NSW Awards ceremony last Thursday, becoming the first primary school in 28 years to receive the award.
“It has an unassuming civic quality that is appropriately institutional, with a refinement and scale to the detailing that is right for children and families,” says Sam Marshall – NSW Architecture Awards Jury Chairman.
The awards also recognised a raft of other educational institutions in the Public Architecture category, including the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Law, Libaray and Teaching Complex by Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp – also taking out an Award for Sustainable Architecture and Commendation for Urban Design.
In another sort of ‘training’, the Premier’s Award – decided by Premier Nathan Rees – perhaps unsurprisingly, went to the embattled Chatswood to Epping Rail Link. The Premier praised the architecture of the project, explaining, “solving at once issues of urban presence, customer amenity, engineering complexity and interiors that have a 100-year life expectancy is no mean feat.”
In the residential awards, the Wilkinson Award – the state’s top Award for residential architecture – went, for the second time, to Neeson Murcutt Architects, this year for their Whale Beach House.
All in all 44 awards and commendations were presented. For the full list of winners click here. The winners will fight it out against the other states’ winners in the National Awards in October.
