This year’s theme, Creating Healthy Homes, challenges students to think about the issues that society will face in the future.
The Thinking Ahead report by Electrolux estimates that 67% of the world population will be urban by 2050 and there will be 30 megacities by 2025. As a result, the world will face resource constraints.
Lyndon Craig, Electrolux Senior Design Manager Asia Pacific, explains: “Homes become more important as the challenges in the urban environment grow; as a result we want our homes to be the center of relaxation and peace of mind.
“Design Lab is one way for Electrolux to build a culture of innovation. We’re looking forward to receiving creative ideas that promote healthy and sustainable lifestyles within the theme of Creating Healthy Homes.”

The competition seeks ideas for products, accessories, consumables and services in three focus areas: Culinary Enjoyment, Fabric Care and Air Purification.
“With entries from more than 60 countries around the world, Electrolux Design Lab gives young, talented Australian designers a platform to showcase their work on a global scale and has led directly to jobs and business opportunities in the design field for many contestants over the years,” said Mr. Craig.
Taking part in the competition is simple; the participants should submit a description of an idea, a visual sketch illustrating the idea, as well as a description of the consumer benefits. The competition opens for entries on the 1 March 2014 and the submission deadline for the competition is 6 April 2014. More about the competition and brief can be found at the Electrolux Design Lab website.
The first prize of the competition is a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design center and 5,000 Euros. Half of the previous year’s winners have continued to work for Electrolux after their internship period. A second prize of 3,000 Euros and third prize of 2,000 Euros are also available, while the public favourite chosen by online votes will be awarded with 1,000 Euros.
