The Wool Parade by Doshi Levien rolled into town last week with a VIP event at the Kvadrat Maharam showroom in Sydney.
August 14th, 2013
The Wool Parade is a custom-designed installation by Doshi Levien for Kvadrat. This unique showcase, which encompasses a series of sculptural upholstered objects, takes inspiration from the avant-garde parties and architectural theatre costumes of the early Bauhaus period.
Touring in Melbourne and Sydney in July and August respectively, are five original objects from The Wool Parade. The pieces, which are peculiarly beautiful and ambiguous in form, each exude an individual character which, when viewed together, are reminiscent of marionettes in a parade.
All are upholstered in an irreverent and bold combination of woollen fabrics, associated with costumes and the theatre. These Kvadrat fabrics include: Hallingdal 65, Divina MD, Divina 3, Steelcut Trio 2, Remix 2 and Willow.
“Our dream is to create work that celebrates an equal exchange and plurality of values, relating to different societies, material and visual cultures,” says Levien and Doshi.
Founded by Jonathan Levien and Nipa Doshi, Doshi Levien is a London-based design practice. Its work, which has gained international recognition, celebrates the hybrid and fuses cultural ideas, technologies, story telling, industrial design and fine craftsmanship.
