The German industrial designer will be in Singapore to launch the Chassis chair for Wilkhahn.
May 3rd, 2011
As part of the upcoming Saturday in Design in Singapore on 21 May, renowned German designer Stefan Diez will be in town to launch the Chassis for Wilkhahn in a special installation created just for the event at the red dot design museum.
The highly complex chair was carefully researched and painstakingly refined together with Wilkhahn over the course of 5 years before entering into full-scale production.
“I had never tackled chair design up till then and found the idea interesting, particularly with Wilkhahn as a customer, and I said yes,” says Diez, recalling one of the first meetings.
“At the beginning, we looked in depth at the company’s history and Wilkhahn products. During this process, we learnt a great deal about sitting. After all, Wilkhahn itself had been something of a trailblazer in this field and had set the bar high.”
Chassis takes inspiration from a bicycle saddle with its stability and precision combined with comfort and a contoured shape. It is also the first mass-produced chair in history made using advanced space-frame technology from the automotive industry.
The result is a highly comfortable, durable and lightweight multipurpose chair with a strong steel metal frame.
In addition to garnering much attention in the design world, the Chassis has also received the red dot Best of the Best Award 2011.
View the Chassis chair installation by Stefan Diez for Wilkhahn at the red dot design museum from 20 – 21 May (Fri and Sat) between 11am – 6pm.
