Design the trophy for our first ever SGID Futures Debate, see it 3D printed at Singapore Indesign on Saturday 7 October, and win!
September 18th, 2017
This year, we’ll be holding our first ever SGID Futures Debate at Singapore Indesign. We’re inviting design and architecture students in Singapore to design a trophy for the winning team! Two copies of the trophy will be 3D printed during the course of the day and presented at the conclusion of the debate.
Aside from the glory of winning the trophy design competition (to be judged by Indesign Media Asia’s editorial and art teams), you’ll win a S$100 voucher from Basheer Graphic Books, a one-year subscription to Cubes magazine, and have your design posted on our social media channels. And to make you feel extra warm and gooey, we’ll give you and your design a special mention at the debate, of course!
Topic: Disruption is a Dirty Word (for Designers)
The ‘For’ Team: Hunn Wai (Lanzavecchia + Wai), Razvan Ghilic-Micu
The ‘Against’ Team: Josh Comaroff (Lekker Architects), Tan Szue Hann (Surbana Jurong)
Synopsis: Overused buzzword that’s lost all meaning? Or enduring phenomenon that designers and architects should consider more deeply? ‘Disruption’ is a word that that some love, and some love to hate. But what exactly is disruption, and in what ways does (or doesn’t) it affect how and what we design? The SGID Futures Debate is a forum where designers can argue for and against the topic, with the winning team decided by the audience. We’re enlisting four of Singapore’s most progressive designers (two teams of two), and we’re expecting a sparking exchange!
Exactly! How could ‘disruption’ be visualised in the form of a small 3D-printed trophy? Surprise us!
The trophy can’t be very big. Our on-site 3D printer won’t be that huge! The 3d-printed trophy can have maximum dimensions of 100mm (w) x 1oomm (d) x 150mm (h). Anything larger will take too long to print!
Our partner 3D Printing Studios Asia tells us your design must be submitted in one of these file formats: STL or OBJ. We’ll let the experts explain: “Commonly a CAD software can generate these formats for the purpose of 3D printing. There are many softwares out there: Solidworks, Maya, Sketchup, Rhino, Tinkercad and Blender. What’s important is to make sure you design with CAD software and not 2D software like Illustrator.”
We need your STL or OBJ file, jpg screen shots of your design and a 100-word description by 6pm on Friday 29 September 2017. Please include your name, email, mobile number, school name, course name and year level. Send a download link for your files to luis@indesign.com.sg
The winner will be notified and announced on our SGID social media channels on Wednesday 4 October 2017.
The winner should attend the debate to receive their prize: Sat 7 Oct, 5:30pm at the SGID Curated Space (72-13 Mohamed Sultan Road).
