As a believer of ‘all things beautiful,’ Interior Designer Kelly Chow opens the doors to one of Hong Kong’s first culinary art and design spaces – we meet with him to learn more.
September 29th, 2013
Spread over 4000 square-meters and tucked neatly away in the back streets of Sheung Wan is designer Kelly Chow’s first personalised commercial project, Shelter Lounge.
What was once a dated aged-care facility is now a spacious recluse for Hong Kong foodies. Taking a short six months to complete, the venue represents Chow’s appreciation for clean, contemporary design.
Pale Yellow and green hues have been combined with contemporary materials such as white marble and stainless steel, while strong hand-crafted oak wood furniture acts as a welcomed balance.
The lower level of Shelter Lounge has been designed to deliver a kitchen-like feel with the placement of custom-made swan chairs upholstered in fabric reminiscent of the 1950’s. Floor to ceiling steel framed windows allow natural light from both sides of the venue and polished concrete flooring has been used to connect with the urban Hong Kong exterior.
Upstairs, Chow has worked to keep the homely vibe with the use of minimal wooden tables and chairs. Framed by local art and warm down-lighting, the space offers an airy warmth.
The entry reception foyer has been reserved for art works contributed by local art and design talent.
