November 26th, 2009
If the views from the newly renovated Ocean Room weren’t jaw dropping enough, then the Yasumichi Morita makeover of Sydney’s restaurant certainly is.
The award-winning designer behind the Japan-based design company ‘Glamorous Inc’ is an advocator of the avant-garde – famous for fitting a bar with crocodile skin and installing a merry-go-round in a shoe shop.
“The very basis of my thinking is that I want things which do not exist,” Morita says. “And so I create them.”
In his first Australian venture, classic-meets-modern with one of his signature chandeliers consisting of over 3000 miniature wooden cylinders creating a curving wave effect across the length of the room.
A dark mixture of wooden elements set a sophisticated scene, with banquettes running the length of one wall, while a row of two-seaters down the centre divide the intimate adjacent booths.
Square port-hole light features mirror the maritime setting, as do the floor to ceiling windows which oversee the water from its prominent position on Circular Quay.
Design features in the setting as significantly as on the plate, where chef Raita Noda draws on his Japanese heritage to create works of culinary art.
