After taking out the hotly contested Living Space category for this year’s INDE.Awards, the Green Square Library and Plaza will be coming to TV screens around the country thanks to Australia by Design (ABD). Designed by Studio Hollenstein with Stewart Architecture, the library, submitted to ABD by Indesign, has raised the bar for civic design and reimagined public architecture for high-density spaces.
Situated in one of Sydney’s fastest growing suburbs, the Green Square Library and Plaza is open, flexible and inclusive. The new heart of this densely populated suburb, the library provides residents with a place to relax and connect, while also injecting some soul into an area defined by compact multi-residential buildings.
Jutting into the landscape with two geometric facades, the real magic of the library is in its iceberg design, where the small aboveground buildings can only hint at the cavernous space that lies below. Head underground and the pools of natural light and greenery betray the subterranean experience, creating a sense of escape that is otherwise impossible in such a highly populated space.
In an age defined by a shift to the digital, the Green Square Library and Plaza reinvigorates the library as a concept, breathing new life into communal spaces and encouraging the kind of connections and activities that are reminiscent of decades past.
