Bio-degradable Seat

11 November 2009

Bio-degradable Seat

A seat that breaks down in an environmentally friendly way.

Finnish designer Samuli Naamanka combines creative excellence with environmental sustainability with his launch of the first industrially produced, 100% bio-degradable ‘Compos’ chair.

The ecological seat by the Finnish furniture manufacturer, Piiroinen, will be launched in Tokyo at the ‘Compos’ chair seminar, set to take place on 11 December 2010.

Naamanka’s ‘Compos’ collection consists of three different chair designs, including a lobby chair, conference chair and café chair.

The innovation lies in the material used, which has taken three years to develop.

The seats are made from Finnish linen and cornstarch, which is polymerised from natural fibre, allowing for the material to be 100% bio-degradable. It is also very easy to clean and hence, durable.

Naamanka says he designed the seat specifically for public spaces, ergonomics and durability. “I usually aim at a new structural solution or aesthetic freshness," he says.

"When everything clicks into place and the piece becomes a whole, it seems natural to design an entire range around the first idea."

The chair also features a steel frame, available in chromed or matte-chromed steel tube to suit different environments.

The frame is completely recyclable when used as part of the production of stainless steel.

The chair has passed the required fire tests without the use of chemical burn-free materials being added to the chair's material.

But most importantly, its user-friendly three-dimensional shape makes it a comfortable resting place.
