The Institute’s 2018 National Architecture Awards shortlist revealed

Take a look at the outstanding work that made the cut in the Australian Institute of Architects’ national awards program.

With projects from across Australia, the Australian Institute of Architects’ National Architecture Awards shortlist includes 70 of the best projects. The final shortlist was whittled down from a large pool of 975 projects across 14 categories, each having gone through the state-level program.

According to jury chair and Past President Richard Kirk, standout categories from this year’s shortlist are the public architecture and multi-residential housing categories. Many of the projects in these categories were ‘formidable’ projects diverse in scale, function and complexity.

Part of the judging process requires a site visit to the eligible projects. Commenting on the scope of judging, Kirk shares, “This national overview provided an opportunity to reflect on how Australia’s vastly different landscapes, urban conditions and economic circumstances influence the work we saw,

“The jury was aware that in comparing work with such differences in location, complexity or budget it was important for there to be a consensus as to how each project responded to the [judging] criteria.”

Considered an important advocacy program, the Awards put architecture on a national stage, and often in front of the wider community. “We were impressed by these projects that established new design benchmarks that can be of value to the broader community and through that influence see a positive change resonate in our built environment,” says Kirk.

Other jury members included Jill Garner, Katelin Butler, Charles Wright and Kevin O’Brien.

The winners will be announced at the National Architecture Awards ceremony in Melbourne on Thursday 1 November.
