Reshaping the Outdoors with Kettal's Geometric Rugs | Indesign Live: Interior Design and Architecture

“Kettal are taking outdoor environments into a more elegant sphere,” says designer Jonathan Levien.

And with the brand’s standout additions to the outdoor realm – such as the majestic Cala chair (designed by Doshi Levien), the timeless calyx-shaped punched-metal Stampa chair (designed by the Bouroullec brothers) and the architecturally inclined Mesh sofas (designed by Patricia Urquiola) – it’s hard to disagree.

Levien and his partner Nippa Doshi have been playing a significant role in Kettal’s journey, designing refined outdoor textiles (Geometric and Terrain), a palette of colours, and a textile-inspired rope (Bela) in addition to the Cala family. Now their touch has made its way to the ground plane with the Geometrics Rugs.

The rugs develop the theme of geometric shapes and diagonal lines that was set with the Geometric fabrics. An interplay of different geometries characterises the two rug designs: Block and Line. In the first design, lines are laid over solid colours to make a spatial and layered effect. In the second design, small blocks of colour are spaced apart and repeated to create a fine mélange. Both rugs are made with the same weaving technique, and are available in two sizes: 2 x 3 and 3 x 4 metres.
