Been to the Tan Boon Liat (TBL) Building lately? You probably have. If you’re a designer or architect in Singapore you’d have to know about the recent appearance of some very well-known brands in our favourite light industrial building. When the latest crop of tenants moved in earlier this year, we detected a new buzz about the place. The long-standing design furniture and product retailers gained neighbours that are bolstering the steady rise of TBL’s reputation as a design destination not to be trifled with.
But there’s always been a design character attached to TBL, despite its gritty industrial architecture and the mainstream dedication of some of its retail tenants. A number of Singapore’s most beloved design furniture, lighting and home accessory retailers have been there for years. But TBL has also been home to numerous design studios – Distillery, ip:li Architects and Sennex Consultants among them.
Brutal as the building is, there’s just something about the view over Outram toward the CBD from the upper floors and the graphic clarity of the afternoon sun on those unrelenting parapets. Don’t tell us you’ve never had your camera pointed at TBL or the panorama it offers, because we won’t believe you.
We’ll be announcing the Saturday Indesign line up of participating TBL showrooms soon – including some of the oldest and youngest TBL resident brands – so stay tuned! There are installation and activations aplenty in the planning, so your Saturday Indesign experience of TBL will be one for the album!
Mohamed Sultan Road has been a fixture on the Saturday Indesign circuit since the event’s earliest days in Singapore. And the Theatreworks building at 72-13 Mohamed Sultan Road has cemented itself as our beloved Saturday Indesign Curated Space venue over the last two editions of the event. It’s where multiple brands come together in a space where they can exhibit how they want to alongside the epicentre of our Design Conversations program.
Scenes from the Saturday Indesign Curated Space at 72-13 in 2016 and 2017:
What we love about 72-13 – a converted rice warehouse along the Singapore River – is not just the vibe of its arches and shutters and its connection to our island’s history; it’s the potential for the lofty space within to support and nurture all manner of creative pursuits. Saturday Indesign included!
Search for an event venue in Singapore that offers a large flexible space, effortless character and fantastic amenity in one package, and you’ll be hard pressed to top 72-13. Timber floors, high ceilings, exposed timber beams and white walls – it’s a rare heaven for creatives in Singapore. And we’ve certainly grown to love it and its riverside setting.
At Saturday Indesign on 12 October, we’ll have a full house of exhibiting product brands as well as a full line up of Design Conversations and activations. Exhibitors and schedule to be announced soon.
And that’s why we’ve themed Saturday Indesign 2019 ‘Community’. Saturday 12 October will be a day for connecting with people as well as the best products in the industry. Networking, learning, and general good times are what the day is all about. And our two venues – a riverside stroll or a free Saturday Indesign shuttle bus ride from each other – will be the heart of the design and architecture community all day.
Join us at TBL and 72-13 and connect with your industry and the Mohamed Sultan-Outram neighbourhood during Saturday Indesign. It’s where it’s at!
