Historically, our approach to places and spaces has been remarkably uniform. Yet, we now understand that the path to creating better environments for all lies in embracing inclusivity and diversity. By listening to a broader spectrum of voices, we can create buildings and landscapes that cater to diverse communities, potentially uncovering solutions to some of our most pressing challenges within the realm of social infrastructure.

In this issue, we venture into the core of these transformative concepts, uncovering their profound impact on our built environment, society, and our relentless pursuit of social equality. We shine a spotlight on remarkable individuals like Trecia Lim of WeCreate Studio (page 68) and Prasoon Kumar of BillionBricks (page 76), who are forging ahead towards a more equitable future with their innovative designs and progressive approaches.

Additionally, we shed light on initiatives and strategies empowering seniors to age in place. They include the impactful work of Lekker Architects and Lanzavecchia + Wai, supporting dementia patients and their caregivers (page 50), Singapore’s pioneering purpose-built social space for seniors (page 106) and the evolution of retirement housing (page 135).

This issue brims with exemplary instances of inclusive design across the Asia-Pacific region, from learning environments championing cognitive inclusion (page 112) to housing solutions prioritising equitable green spaces in densely populated urban areas (page 120 and 129). Representing the pinnacle of the region’s design prowess are the 2023 INDE.Awards Winners (page 13), meticulously chosen by our diverse and expert jury spanning the Indo-Pacific, Europe and the US.
