In 2015, designer Aaron Lim was a Launch Pad Asia winner with his lamp Mirage, which casts watery patterns onto surfaces. Judge David Chiu admired how it both served a function and conveyed an emotion. We tracked down Aaron to see what he’s been up to since and discovered he’s still designing for emotion.

What was your situation when you won Launch Pad Asia?
When I participated in Launch Pad Asia in 2015, I was already working at Design Bridge Asia, as a 3D Junior Designer, specialising in branding for our international clients in the space of packaging and retail.
What’s been happening for you since then?
Since then, in terms of my career, I moved my way up to a 3D Designer position in the Brand Experience team within Design Bridge Asia, and continue to build and strengthen brand ideas for our global clients, and ultimately create positive brand experiences for consumers. On a personal level, I have also spent any free time I could gather to brainstorm and kickstart an Art X Design project (and yes, it is to do with lamps and lighting).
What was your most valuable take-away from Launch Pad Asia? Why do you think young designers should enter the competition?
That would definitely be the recognition gained from winning the competition, as well as the exposure to the design scene and its standard across Asia. I believe it is important for designers to know what and who is out there to be updated and relevant in the real world, and what better way than to participate in a friendly competition to know yourselves and the others? Launch Pad Asia is thus a good platform to engage young designers in this exchange of knowledge, thinking and skills.
Tell us more about what you’re doing now, career wise.
To further elaborate on my role as a 3D designer in Design Bridge Asia, my everyday task is to bring brands to life by bridging the emotional connections between a brand and its consumers. I get to work on a multitude of projects, ranging from packaging design, product design, event and exhibition design and retail design, all coming hand-in-hand to create the holistic brand experience for the consumers.
In your opinion, what are the most important things young designers should keep in mind today?
Be passionate in what you do. Always stay eager and willing to learn. Simply put, it is all the heart and the mind.
Entries are now open for Launch Pad Asia 2017. Launch Pad is presented with Principal Partner Schiavello and Founding Partner Living Edge.
