Creative partnerships have been formed and ideas have been bubbling. See what these designers have dreamed up for Singapore Indesign 2014 The Project.

Designers Get Creative at Singapore Indesign

October 2nd, 2014

The power of creative collaborations can never be underestimated. All through design history, some of the best works are the result of partnerships. For this reason, The Project collaboration series is an integral part of Singapore Indesign 2014 as designers pair up with retailers to create installations that are jaw dropping, provocative, and downright fun. This year’s line-up of designers brings a fresh and varied load of perspectives.

Angelynn Tan x Romanez

The Singapore Young Designers Award recipient began her career creating printed textiles for lifestyle products and fashion collections for Robinsons, and Song and Kelly at Club 21. Angelynn Tan’s fashion/jewellery works explore textiles as sculptural materials. In her collaboration with Romanez, she creates wearable art from interior fabrics from Pierre Frey and Christian Lacroix for Designers Guild.

Chong Fah Cheong x XTRA

Most people know Chong Fah Cheong through his many public sculptures in Singapore, the most recognisable ones including The First Generation bronze sculpture of children jumping into the Singapore River and Another Day (The Coolies) in the west wing of the Singapore Art Museum. At Singapore Indesign, he creates an outdoor sculpture using Herman Miller’s Kivo.

Formwerkz x EDL

Known for challenging norms and creating highly sensorial experiences, this young and dynamic architecture firm has proposed new typologies for anything from houses to office spaces. Formwerkz creates magic once more in collaboration with EDL with an enchanted forest experience that engages multiple senses.

Architecture firm GAD’s brand of design is considered, intelligent and witty. Led by principal Wu Yen Yen, whose experience ranges from hospitality and commercial projects to residences, GAD’s works transcend scale and programme, and always find their genesis in culture, context, heritage, and time. For Singapore Indesign, GAD looks at JUNG Asia’s product advancement while illustrating the “circuit board” of wires that run behind the scenes.

Geyer x Wilkhahn/Waldmann Lighting

Projects like the BHP Billiton Marketing office and the Citi Singapore office place Geyer as a major player in the Singapore commercial interior design scene. Its approach to design is highly collaborative, not just within its team of varied specialists, but also in its interactions with clients. Geyer’s entry for The Project is birthed out of the same spirit of collaboration as it works with Wilkhahn and Waldmann Lighting to create a Space Odyssey to remember.

True specialists in workplace design and build projects, ID21 has dedicated itself to integrating modern interior design strategies into corporate offices. The 18-year-old practice counts the Nestle Professional office and Bordier et Cie as its clients, among many others. For Singapore Indesign, it takes a whimsical leap with a surreal Magis world at XTRA.

Luxurious boutique resorts, charming cafes and memorable retail spaces all make up IMAJIN’s portfolio of work. Eschewing stylistic dalliances, the studio prefers instead to tell stories of value and create experiences that are memorable. It does exactly this in its homage to Pierre Paulin in collaboration with XTRA. Catch the interactive, multi-media installation that celebrates the legendary designer and his iconic work for the likes of Artifort and Magis.

LASALLE X BW Furniture

LASALLE x BW Furniture

Each year that Singapore Indesign has taken place, LASALLE has always been a part of The Project in collaboration with BW Furniture. Each year, it goes head to head with top design firms that participate in The Project and has always turned up creative and thought-provoking concepts. This year is no different as it looks at the role of tradition craftsmanship in contemporary furniture.

M Moser Associates x Kokuyo

M Moser Associates x Kokuyo

With 15 offices worldwide, M Moser Associates has carved a name for itself in the area of designing effective workplace environments. Its intention has always been to address the needs of the contemporary workplace, one of which is the idea of sustainability. It explores the idea of increasing global sustainability with an interactive landscape of wire sculptures at Kokuyo, and in collaboration with Temasek Polytechnic.

Paper Carpenter x APS Lifestyle

As its name suggests, humble paper is the material of choice for Paper Carpenter when it comes to creating unforgettable environments. Using paper in unexpected and innovative ways, Paper Carpenter has created everything from window displays to furniture and even toys. At APS Lifestyle during Singapore Indesign, its three-dimensional structures will have you looking at the kitchen in a whole new light.

Studiogoto x Kohler

Studiogoto belongs to an increasingly rare breed of architecture firms where seemingly simple things are made sensual and special. Its works are thoughtful and, at times, thought provoking – much like its installation in collaboration for Kohler at Singapore Indesign. A playful installation invites visitors to engage with an interactive wall and reveals nuggets of wisdom about what the future of design will be like.

Topos Design x DREAM

Topos Design x DREAM

A varied portfolio of projects forms the firm foundation of Topos Design. Residential interiors, corporate interiors, retail spaces and hospitality projects all point to a highly versatile studio. Participating in The Project for the second time, Topos Design partners with DREAM and creates a giant prism that visitors can enter. Inside, a design treat awaits, and perspectives will be changed – literally.

Zin Cattell x Romanez

Zin Cattell cannot be put in a box. He is equal part fashion designer and branding guru with his own menswear label Menswear and branding agency Mwahaha. The latter provides consultation, art direction and design services, including uniform design for a holistic approach towards branding. At Singapore Indesign, the multi-talented Cattell puts on his designer hat and creates menswear using interior textiles from Pierre Frey.
