Notable brands from the Czech Republic were recently on show at the Designinteriors trade exhibition in Singapore. Here were some of the highlights.
September 9th, 2014
The Czech Republic is renown as a producer of fine crystal, so when we were invited to the Czech pavilion at Designinteriors in Singapore last week, we were expecting to see lots of well known glass brands – of which we were not disappointed. But we were also pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the offerings presented, even within this category.
Lasvit
Founded in 2007, Lasvit may be considered a young company – compared to some of the century-old brands on show – but the group is today a leading designer and manufacturer of custom contemporary light fittings with high-profile projects that span the globe Arik Levy’s latest collaboration with the brand was certainly eye-catching: a floor to ceiling light fixture that cascaded to the floor like a colourful, sparkling waterfall.
Moser
One of the most highly respected manufacturers of luxury Bohemian crystal glass products in the world, Moser is also one of the oldest, with a history dating back over a century. But this is a company in keeping with the times. Today, Moser actively works with top external artists to produce new and original designs that regularly launch in well-known trade fairs around the globe.
Bomma
At the other end of the spectrum, Bomma is a young company that is redefining the business of traditional glassmaking. In the Bomma factory, new generation, precision cutting machines – instead of craftsmen – are used in the making high-quality, contemporary glassware that are suitable for everyday use.
Verreum
Founded in 2009, Verreum is a contemporary brand with a focus on silvered glass making. The company works with both Czech and international designers for its products, and produces of its own unique silvered glass with glass blowing facilities in Novy Bor.
Silvered glass is double-walled glassware with a silver coating lining the inside, and each manufacturer has its own recipe, which is a closely guarded secret. Verreum uses the highest quality 99.99% pure silver and the seal used in the bottom is stainless steel to prevent humidity from entering the inside of the glassware.
Mmcité
The only furniture brand represented at the pavilion, Mmcité is also one of the more successful to come out of the Czech Republic. The company produces street furniture, from bus shelters to benches and bicycle stands, and its products can be found in cities around the world.
