A redesign project to showcase students’ skills.
March 1st, 2009
Australian Workstation Manufacturers (AWM) had thought for some time about redesigning their showroom. With two new machining centres – taking the total to five – Australian Workstation Manufacturers are Australian owned and Australian made with their clients enjoying convenient lead times of 2-4 weeks. Everything from design and manufacture to sales is done from their Alexandria showroom and factory.
With new products and ideas being created daily they needed an area to showcase their achievements. And that’s how ‘Project – Redesign the Australian Workstation Manufacturers Showroom’ came about.
AWM Directors, Anthony Scotts and Ric Lewarne were passionate about giving budding designers the chance to take this on. After approaching five different colleges AWM finally had a breakthrough with Design Centre Enmore, thanks to a student at the College, Bernadette Bellwood.
AWM and Design Centre Enmore joined forces to explore the possibilities of having students redesign the company’s Alexandria showroom.
AWM would be able to tap into new ideas to redesign their showroom and use new up-and-coming designers to do so, while Design Centre Enmore students would finally get a ‘real’ project to work on.
The third-year interior design students jumped at the chance to work on the Project and so an initial briefing was held at the existing AWM showroom/factory.
Students broke into teams and had just four weeks to turn the project around.
The Directors at AWM were blown away with the quality and attention to detail. The designs, the materials and the ideas were creative, realistic and exceeded expectations. AWM chose the winning scheme by Kania Sachrudi & Elly Levenston.
AWM are committed to progressing the relationship built through the program, continuing to give Design Centre Enmore students the chance to work on real-world projects and providing them with support for the future.
