A good wine needs a good cellar, and the wine cellars of the ‘Unico’ wine by Vega-Sicilia in Spain’s Valbuena de Duero were in need of refurbishment.

Led by interior designer Fernando Salas of Salas Studio, the project team created a space that was as much visually striking as it was functional.

The aim of the project was also to reduce and simplify the materials used in the fit-out, for a pure and cohesive look.

An undulating ceiling of solid oak slats brings together the 3 naves of the ground and underground floors, as well as concealing newly-installed air conditioning systems.

Clinker-type tiles clad the side walls, cross-linked to correspond with the existing floor. The floor and vertical faces of the interior come to form a U-shape.

Elsewhere, stainless steel, glass and concrete is used to create sculptural elements for a more industrial feel.

The wine barrels – naturally a key component of the fit-out – provide repetition and provoke a sense of harmony in the underground cellar space.
