Stepping out of the box, Nendo's design for this Tokyo-based digital agency delivers an office that explores the value in negative and hidden space.

Nendo has designed a new office for Spicebox, a Tokyo-based digital agency that works across strategic planning, interactive promotion and creative digital marketing.

Taking their cue from the firm’s name, which symbolises an ability to deliver surprise and delight “like a variety of stimuli that comes tumbling out of a box”, Nendo has designed seven box-shaped meeting rooms of different sizes around the 997sqm office, all of which are entered by way of a wall that has been ‘flipped open’.

The idea goes further. Each meeting room opens in a slightly different way to connect the interior and exterior areas.

In addition, the entryways deliver a unique spatial experience in which each box reveals itself as you walk around the room. They also carve out semi-private communication corners where discussions can occur, and functional elements can be kept out of sight.

Nendo studio says that “the idea was to make not only the boxes’ interior but also the area around them into an active office environment where people can easily work and interact”.
