Deka furniture launch their involvement with Tiwi Design.
April 27th, 2009
Queensland furniture design and manufacturing company, Deka, are supporting and promoting local Australian design with the launch of screen printed textiles by Tiwi Design.
Tiwi design is a collective of around 20 artists operating from Nguiu on the south eastern corner of Bathurst Island – 80km north of Darwin. The artists produce everything from paintings and wood sculptures to ceramics and textiles.
The Tiwi Design artists hand screen print original designs on cotton, linen and silk. The textile production at Tiwi has been operating since the early 80s.
The award winning textiles produced here are now available from Deka for use in upholstery (see the Deka Bench above) as well as soft furnishings, wall hangings and fashion.
“We have been long searching for a suitable locally produced textile collecton as a companion for our Deka furniture range,” says Nora Kinnunen of Deka.
“We are immensely impressed by the work of Tiwi Design in their promotion of the Tiwi culture through the preservation and development of their arts.
“These textiles bring to us a richness of Australian history which, alongside locally produced contemporary furniture may continue to tell new chapters in Australian contemporary design culture.”
The range of Tiwi fabrics and Deka furniture is available to view by appointment by phoning (61 7) 3252 8133 or contacting the team at brisbane@dekafurniture.com.au
