Australia’s Brad Stebbing has designed the new Samba collection for HIVE

Full of rhythm, this new collection from HIVE – Kenneth Cobonpue’s lighting and accessories offshoot – is bursting with life.

Designed by Australia’s Brad Stebbing, winner of the HIVE lighting design competition in 2008 with his Bud light, Samba is a range that embraces the unique craft-directed manufacturing practices of the Filipino design collective.

Where bamboo and rattan are common materials used in accessories and furniture across the region, Stebbing has employed a traditional Vietnamese technique of rattan rod coiling to create a real visual fluidity.

Stebbing likens the forms to the motion of dancing hips: “Samba works great in clusters, but feels just as comfortable dancing solo.”

Smooth externally and ribbed on the inside, the contrast in texture is a pleasant surprise.

Offered in playful colours that complement the irregularity and playfulness of the shades, the lights are also offered in sophisticated hues that lend them to more refined installations.

The collection will be launched a Maison & Objet this week in Paris and available locally through KE-ZU.
