Contrasts – even in interior design

Many products from the Pedrali collection were chosen as part of the decor for Contraste, the new Milan-based restaurant from Uruguayan chef Matias Perdomo, Argentinian sous-chef Simon Press and Italian maître Thomas Piras.

Contraste is a restaurant where contrast is king and classic rules are turned upside down. The menu is a mirror that reflects the guest’s image, to emphasise that it is he or she at the centre of attention and not the chef, and that his culinary desires will be indulged.

It does not flaunt its presence with bright windows or big signs. You won’t come across it by chance. Diners enter, in fact, through a small, almost anonymous door on Via Meda. Here they reach a courtyard “dressed in white” with conical base Ikon tables alongside Volt and Plus armchairs.

The courtyard leads to the interior, whose design, directed by David Luraschi, took into account and respected the existing structures, such as the decorated ceilings, the wooden floors in the rooms and the classic Venetian “seminato” flooring in the corridors, which he countered with new, strong choices of materials, such as steel for the door and beams or silicone coral for the chandeliers, a contemporary reinterpretation of classic Venetian chandeliers. Just a few tables, with soft lighting, spaced to facilitate conversation, characterise the dining rooms.

The classical shape of the Ester armchair, a beige leather monolith completed by refined die-casted aluminium legs, is paired with Liberty tables, which have a cast iron central base powder-coated white, combined with a round top to create a sophisticated atmosphere where time stands still.

On the other hand, in the private dining room an Arki-Table takes centre stage with its characteristic trestle legs and ultra-thin rectangular top, again flanked by Ester armchairs.
