Arco Lamp Leaps into LED

A Twentieth Century design classic has been afforded a new lease on life thanks to the release of this new model

In 1962, brothers Archille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni gave us one of the most iconic pieces of Twentieth Century lighting design, the Arco floor lamp.

To mark its milestone Fiftieth anniversary, the Carrara marble and aluminium arch is now offered with LED illumination in addition to the original halogen fitting (for the purists).

For its time, a delightfully pragmatic response to the design brief, Arco is the suspension lamp that requires no ceiling mount. The extraordinary arched aluminium stem giving the light source a weightlessness over tables and work surfaces that floor lamps had, until now, never offered.

With the prevalence of incandescent luminaires waning in the face of demand for superior performance and concern for better environmental practices, FLOS have commendably introduced the LED variant which offers a uniform, high quality output.

A white opalescent diffuser is the most notable addition concealing the LED component, but the piece still retains the Arco’s characteristic light and shadow play, cast upward through the circular perforations.

Not quite a facelift, more of a little ’tightening’, the modifications made serve in keeping the Arco lamp as relevant and ground-breaking today as it was when first envisaged by the Castiglionis.
