Once home to heavy industry, Alexandria is now at the forefront of innovative, high-end design. After Sydney Indesign 2013, it is not hard to see that it hosts some of the best that Australia has to offer. Pip Daly Reports.
KE-ZU has always been a major drawcard at SID, in their more recent home of Alexandria they continue to supply furniture that aims to ‘make people feel good’. But this year, it wasn’t only just about the furniture. Inviting guests to partake in the Japanese notion of Tanabata, KE-ZU asked visitors to place a wish on their blossom tree.

But it was the most recent newcomers to the region that drew out the quirky! It was a three day ‘Spring Break Party’ at Blu Dot, complete with keg and air guitar competitions – at least noise complaints were kept to a minimum. And if partying wasn’t your thing, a quite, refined day on the golf course was not too far away.

Gelosa/ New Age Veneers
Right next door, Carpet Republic was running a mini-golf competition. Who said carpets only had one purpose?
Blu Dot
Down the road the party continued at Coco Republic, who had teamed up with Smeg to present a smorgasbord of Italian culinary delights. Oh, there was Aperol Spritz as well. But if Spanish cuisine was more to your taste, Cosh Living was holding a fiesta on their outside balcony retreat.
Milano
And the whole block was invited, including their new showroom partners, Mokum, and the painted models from the TSAR carpet showroom.
Tsar
Covered in unique textured patterns, the TSAR models celebrated the work of David Trubridge’s recent designs for this innovative carpet company.
Mokum
Cosentino launched their new showroom, and as the global leader in the production and distribution of innovative quartz surfaces for architecture and design, Alexandria is certainly the perfect place for their creative showroom.
Blum / Lincoln Sentry
For over 60 years, Blum has turned the opening and closing of furniture into a mesmerising experience and visitors were invited to gain insight into the world of Blum over high tea.
Carpet Republic
Collaborating with Lincoln Sentry on the launch of their new Hera Lighting, Blum also showcased their innovative LED light solutions for the kitchen and bathroom.
Cosh Living
Representing world famous brands from across the European region, Milano Furniture opened their doors to visitors passionate for great design.
TCW
A double hit of design style from New Age Veneers awaited you in Gelosa, while it was a chocolate fix that greeted you at Ecosmart Fire. And if it was all too much, Tables Chairs & Workstations were offering a time out in their new, personalised workspace retreat stations.
Cosentino
No doubt there was a lot to see in Alexandria. But every showroom offered new and unique ways for visitors to engage with their product, and the spirit that is Sydney Indesign. And from a suburb once composed of gritty, steel factories, Alexandria sure has a thing or two to say about innovative design and manufacturing.
