Andrea Eckersley wins the Royal Como Art Commission

Emerging contemporary artist, Andrea Eckersley has been announced as the winner of the $10,000 Royal Como Art Commission.

Andrea was chosen from sitalented emerging artists from Monash Art Design and Architecture (MADA) as the winner of the $10,000 prize – a philanthropic initiative bRoyal Como developer C&L International Holdings.

Andrea’s work will be installed in C&L’s Melbourne residential development, RoyaComo in South Yarra and is a direct response to the location, light, materiality and use of the space, perfectly suiting its environment.

MADA Head of Fine Art, Professor Callum Morton and Sonia Simpfendorfer, The Creative Director at Nexus Designs selected Andrea’s piece for its integrity and thoughtfulness – a perfect fit with the detailed, personal approach that has been taken for the Royal Como interiors, which are underpinned by Australian art, design, materials and finishes.

Andrea, who has a PHD in fine arts from MADA, was thrilled with the commission and says the commission represents a unique opportunity to extend her painting practice, and allow her to work in a larger space on a larger scale.

Sonia Simpfendorfer says Andrea’s work is subtle and precise, with considered use of colour, line and reflectance, and will enhance the daily experience of those passing through the Royal Como foyer. “The Royal Como Art Commission is an exciting and laudable initiative and it is an honour to be working with a developer and project team who are prepared to support young and emerginartists financially and in an authentic way,” she says.
