It’s funny what you discover by mistake sometimes. Nine times out of ten, these serendipitous discoveries turn out to be so extraordinary that they define your career. During the design process, Seoul-based artist and designer, Saerom Yoon, found that some textures randomly appear when casting an acrylic resin.
Wanting to create shapes purely through colour, Yoon’s remarkable Crystal Series_Raw Editions are dyed with transparent acrylic resin, enabling a maximum expression of colour regardless of material property.
After every application, the patterns themselves manifest in different ways each time, somehow beyond the control of the maker. As a result, Yoon has selected a few of those textures and put them together after processing, creating what is ultimately a series of intensely dreamy object gems.
What’s really alluring – and somewhat unexpected – is how the organic textures created are stunningly designed through natural reaction, rather than the imposing hand of a maker or machine.
It’s a nice reminder that sometimes we as designers need to get out of our own way, and simply let our selected materials naturally unfold as the will.
