Alice Blackwood and Mandi Keighran attend the launch of the ’Nub’ chair by Patricia Urquiola for Andreu World.
April 15th, 2011
Yesterday we attended the press preview for Patricia Urquiola’s ’Nub’ chair, a collection which combines classic carpentry and modern design.
Patricia described this as a comeback chair… perhaps infusing the project with her own aspirations to have a really iconic piece.
Read on to see what she had to say about working with Andreu World, in particular, and how they approached the conception of ’Nub’.
“I have a house in Spain, on Ibiza. When I come home in the summer time, I came to visit Andreu. They are Spanish… it’s easy for me to be in Italia, but to be in Spanish – it’s definitely easier. We speak absolutely the same language. It makes the dialogue with the company even easier.
Another thing, they are very serious. Normally I thought this kind of work would be very expensive, but no. Because I was working on a comeback chair in plastic.
’We don’t think so,’ they said, ’We can do something as a comeback chair, if you really want this, but do it in another way.’ They convinced me – they’re very serious.
Design is ideas, prototyping, industry relations, commercialisation. My work has to do with all these things. And the company, they know what they have in their hands, they know how to introduce it into the market – which doesn’t always happen.
After 10 years, Andreu know how to sell something. My work is to do with longevity, and they’re very serious about how they’re going to take care of the project – which is an important thing for a designer.”
