Earlier this month we saw a host of exciting new products and services announced as finalists in the 2012 Australian International Design Awards.

To qualify as Good Design, a product or service must satisfy the five criteria: Form, Function, Quality, Safety and Sustainability.

Categories are as follows: Consumer, Business and Technology, Medical and Scientific, Automotive and Transport, Sport and Leisure, Housing and Building, Heavy Machinery, Architectural and Interior, Non-for-profit Service and Business Service.

Worth a mention is the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker – compact and lightweight enough to fit in a backpack, it can also be carried in one hand.

The speaker’s flat surfaces have an integrated cover for protection while transporting, which opens up and doubles as a stand.

Soundlink is available in 2 versions: the Premium, made of leather, bright chrome and brushed metal surfaces, and the Standard, of ballistic nylon and satin metal.

Another stand out finalist in the Consumer category, Branca by Sam Hecht for Mattiazzi, was only made possible by allowing time for the idea and design to be perfected.

Branca’s lines come together, meet and branch off in one single piece of bent wood; lightweight yet strong, and crafted without a single screw.

Mattiazzi’s wood is never chemically treated and it is manufactured in a factory powered and heated entirely by solar power and waste products from the wood.

From the category of Architecture and Interior comes Interface Raw, a carpet tile by David Oakey Designs.

No 2 tiles are ever the same, and with wear, the product reveals its character, replicating old concrete and weather textures. It’s made of 100% recycled content, including old fishing nets.
