‘Alamak!’ is a frequently spoken word in many Southeast Asian countries as well as Japan. It expresses the meaning of ‘oh my god!’ or ‘what a surprise!’. The alamak! exhibition, held from 2 April to 12 September 2016 at the XXI Triennale International Exhibition Milan, aims to showcase the contemporary voice Asia design through the works of 12 talents from the region, in response to the curatorial theme, “Design After Design”.
The exhibition alamak! follows the premise that the field of design has so far been largely dominated by the West, but that an Asian design evolution is set to change things, where the next generation of Asian producers with resources are beginning to seek out and work with young homegrown designers and, armed with new knowledge and insights into branding, are forging an alliance to meet the growing Asian market. This could herald the next stage of design development in and around Asia.
Thus, with an awareness that Asia could be the driving force of the next world design movement, the alamak! exhibition explores how the forward-thinking design process and fabrication will work. The group of 12 designers, who come from various disciplines and backgrounds, will each present a unique project. The common thread among all the talents is that each expresses high originality and creativity, and together they form a coherent image of ‘made in Asia by Asian Designers’.

To honour Chef James Won’s appointment as Gaggenau’s first Malaysian Culinary Partner, we asked the gastronomic luminaire about parallels between Gaggenau’s ethos and his own practice, his multidimensional vision of Modern Malaysian – and how his early experiences of KFC’s accessible, bold flavours influenced his concept of fine dining.
In design, the concept of absence is particularly powerful – it’s the abundant potential of deliberate non-presence that amplifies the impact of what is. And it is this realm of sophisticated subtraction that Gaggenau’s Dishwasher 400 Series so generously – and quietly – occupies.

In this candid interview, the culinary mastermind behind Singapore’s Nouri and Appetite talks about food as an act of human connection that transcends borders and accolades, the crucial role of technology in preserving its unifying power, and finding a kindred spirit in Gaggenau’s reverence for tradition and relentless pursuit of innovation.
