A new energy efficient sports centre by Mode Design takes advantage of its impressive harbourside location, writes Lorenzo Logi.

The newly opened Marie Bashir Mosman Sports Centre manages to create a generous indoor space while preserving magnificent harbour views.
Built on former defence land across Middle Head, Georges Heights and Chowder Bay, the Centre is part of a new urban development project that has made numerous natural landmarks accessible for the first time in generations.
Designed by Mode Design, the structure combines the palette and materials of the original drill hall with modern elements, such as translucent materials and clear span counterweight doors to maximise airiness and light and grant panoramic views of the harbour.
“The impressive views are one of the major attractions of the project,” said Project Architect Paul Oreshkin.
“We were able to successfully meet the client’s intention to achieve a light and airy space by combining translucent materials which help to provide high levels of diffused ambient light into the building.”
The development also incorporates various energy reducing strategies, such as the installation of a photovoltaic solar panel roofing system that feeds back into the electricity grid.
The Centre includes an internal full size court, which can be used for hockey, netball and able-bodied and wheelchair basketball.
