Melbourne’s design duo behind Ruby Studio give light to letter ’J’
April 10th, 2008
Ruby Studio is a collaboration between product designer John Hoogendoorn and glass artist Kristin McFarlane. The duo produces inventive products, which present art within a modern construct.
They recently launched the stunning Aurora Lamp. A light design made from sixty laser cut pieces of acrylic, in the shape of the letter ‘j’.
"The Aurora lamp is a lyrical re-interpretation of modernist design," says John.
"The transmission of light and the dance of light and shade create a sense of calm and stillness in its environment. With the Aurora lamp we wanted to produce a light fitting made from many simple elements combined to create a complex form."
The lamp won Best Lighting Design at Fringe Furniture, part of the Fringe Festival in Melbourne.
"Each part is twisted in relation to its neighbour to allow a complex three dimensional object to materialize from simple components."
The light houses an energy saving globe, and is available direct from Ruby Studio.
